the 'i' stands for incomplete?

dos is not a shell
dos used command.com as shell iirc, and there where even true 
replacements for it like 4dos again IIRC. i wouldnt bet that none
supported something like this.
and even with command.com there likely are ways to do this.

if the user uses a shell that lacks a feature, the user should switch
to a different shell or fix the shell if he needs that feature not try
to add it to every application as a workaround
