Just start a thread on ffmpeg-devel and ask.  Answering questions and
donating optimizations come to mind.  You could also pay somebody to
work on the independent implementation.  It's not like Google is short
on money and you need an independent implementation for VP8 to be a
truly open standard.

What widespread adoption are you talking about?  The lib is not even a
month old..

Sure, some people may have used it earlier, but now that it has moved
into the open it should gain an order of magnitude more users at least.
