That is a question I am interested also.

I usually use XviD when I need MPEG 4.2, because I did not manage to find
settings for the native encoder that yield as good a quality-for-bitrate as
XviD -mbd 2 / vhq=4 in fixed_quant=2 mode. But the native encoder has a
whole lot of settings and knobs to tweak.

I think some presets files would be very useful.
