Running fate is really easy.

0. Get the test suite:

rsync -avL rsync://rsync.mplayerhq.hu:/samples/fate-suite samples

1. Configure with --samples:

./configure --samples=/path/to/samples

2. Run fate

make fate

I am not sure how you do update expected values though.
