Changing the semantic of a parameter is, IMHO, not a good option.

My advice: let us deprecate the use of numeric values (remove from the doc
and print a warning) and only use names ("tff", "bff", "auto"). Then it
becomes easy to add new values with new semantics ("invert", "prog").
