i think carl just wanted to point to the commit that caused this so
others dont spend time bisecting.

About how to solve this, can you benchmark your patch against simply
reverting this ?
It would be interresting, but the revert has the problem that the VLA
would be reintroduced and VLAs can be problematic so it would be better
if this can be solved without VLA.
