Oh, yes, now I understand: format gets merged before channel layout, and it
succeeds, so when aresample is inserted, format is already merged "over" it.
Merging of (format,layouts,rate) should either succeed as a whole or fail as
a whole, since conversion works as a whole too.

Thanks for explaining. I believe the use of a dry-run mode to achieve that
should work.
