Well, it does not really work. It was just an attempt to fix an obviously wrong assumption.

I think it started to give some, although wrong, output for another file.
I am also a bit worried by what you say about the memory usage, I wouldn't expect this to be caused by this patch, it should be possible to trigger this with the existing code if the input file was modified to be accepted by it...
