I have a lot of other things to do these days, but it will settle soon.

In the meantime, here is the patch series in its current state. It passes
FATE, and I believe the code is slightly simpler, but it does not bring any
enhancement yet (except, probably, it fixes the "last frame omitted" bug in
shortest mode).

Adding the new features should be pretty straightforward, but I believe it
belongs to another patch series anyway.
