Thanks for providing an example. Another useful one is NetBSD and OpenBSD.
In both examples the projects have define themselves are serving different
purposes.

As it stands both FFmpeg and Libav target a very similar user base; the blurbs
on both our websites describe identical mission statements. How do you see
Libav's purpose different from FFmpeg. What makes someone want to use (or
contribute) to one and not the other?
