... or set the alpha channel to 0xFF.

I wonder if this isn't slightly misleading:
If a codec supports RGB24, it doesn't have 
to support RGB0 (or RGBA). Some codecs 
support both RGBA and RGB0 iirc.

But you have to decide if this sentence 
makes the API easier to understand or not.
