does someone intend to actually work on a overhaul and is such
overhaul actually wanted and usefull, what would it involve?

is it likely that such overhaul would also fix the issue of
user application specific option translation?

if noone will ever do an overhaul then its a fairly bad idea to wait
for it

this assumes it is documented, that they know where or for what to
search and that they find it.
as a quick test one could ask a random user to find the page in
each projects documentation from the error message this thread is
about. That is the documentation of mplayer, mpv, vlc and gstreamer
just to pick some random apps
and look at the clock how much time that did cost to find
also their subjective oppinon would be interresting to hear if they
consider it worth it to instead print directly usable syntax

Complexity theory is the science of finding the exact solution to an
approximation. Benchmarking OTOH is finding an approximation of the exact
