SDL_setenv is there in SDL2. I have updated my sdl2 branch after the ALSA 
fix was committed, it uses SDL_setenv there, and I believe it works.

BTW there are 4 patches in my branch, have you squashed them to one? Maybe 
it would make sense to keep them separate before we commit them for future 
reference...
