 I don't know why you say that VLC has the same problem. VLC is a video
 player, and is supposed to display the video. So if you want meaningful
 output, you have to enable a deinterlacer (unless vlc does that by
 default). Also, VLC will probably upscale using the video output API, and
 not libswscale.

 (Unless you mean the transcoder part of VLC.)
