 Thanks for the tip compn. I actually tried atag, but I got a byte-for-byte
 identical file as a result as if the flag didn't do anything. Is this the
 correct usage for setting wFormatTag to 1?

 The spec looks clear, and the AVI made by ffmpeg certainly works in other
 player software I've tried. I'll let the developers of Sony Vegas know
 about this issue as soon as I can. For now, I'll have to devise a
 workaround.
