 In configure script I found this case statement:

     *-asan)
         cc_default="${toolchain%-asan}"
         add_cflags  -fsanitize=address
         add_ldflags -fsanitize=address
     ;;
 }}}

 So specifying --toolchain=gcc-asan does exactly what you said. It adds
 -fsanitize=address to both CFLAGS and LDFLAGS.
