 Just chiming in about how useful this feature would still be.

 There is still no open-source way to play or transcode these files.  It
 looks like significant bounties were offered in the past, but no one was
 interested, so not sure if there will ever be any traction, but would be
 glad to contribute any way I can if someone was interested.
