[FFmpeg-user] Video capture device

I have a Decklink HD video card that I would like to use to capture 
1280x720 59.94fps video from. I have a sample application that records 
individual raw video and 48k audio to a file, but would like to extend 
that to writing some kind of compressed video/audio in a single container.

It appears it might be possible to simply pipe this to ffmpeg, but I'm 
not opposed to digging in and writing some code. This particular device 
has a (ugg, proprietary)  library that makes callback calls with 
individual frames. What would be the best starting point for this?
