Thank you, that was very helpful.  
But now I run into another error while configuring ffmpeg:

Jims-MacBook-Pro:ffmpeg-HEAD-5f9cbad jim$ ./configure --prefix=${TARGET} --cc=clang --enable-nonfree --enable-gpl --enable-version3 --arch=x86_64 --enable-hardcoded-tables --enable-libfdk-aac  --enable-libvo-aacenc --enable-libvpx --enable-libmp3lame --enable-libx264 --enable-libvorbis --enable-libtheora --enable-libspeex --disable-indevs --disable-outdevs --disable-decoder=libvpx --disable-ffserver --disable-network

ERROR: libvpx encoder version must be >=0.9.7

However, I'm using the latest libvpx, libvpx-v1.1.0
So what could be wrong now?
