I think it should be added that (especially when talking 
about "resources") it is not at all clear that the decision 
to use as many threads as available when decoding with 
FFmpeg was a very good one, using -threads 1 may be a 
good choice for many use-cases. (The overhead when using 
more than one thread is typically huge.)
This is of course mostly unrelated to the original 
question.
