It will be gcc 4.2.1, IE the last GPL2 version available. This is from
a FreeBSD 8.4 box that I'm sure would exhibit the same problem:

Using built-in specs.
Target: i386-undermydesk-freebsd
Configured with: FreeBSD/i386 system compiler
Thread model: posix
gcc version 4.2.1 20070719  [FreeBSD]

clang, or a more recent gcc from a package, work fine.
