Please run:
$ ffmpeg -i output.m2v -f null -
One of the last lines of the console output sill 
show you the actual number of frames in the m2v 

If you don't believe the number the following 
command will output every single frame of your 
video as a raw mpeg2video file.
$ ffmpeg -i output.m2v -vcodec copy -f image2 raw%4d.m2v

The following will output a jpg for every 
single frame:
$ ffmpeg -i output.m2v out%4d.jpg
