You are free to continue to use VLC for transcoding, I am told it can
do a fine job as well.

If this worked in a previous version and not in the latest, it is
either a feature that has changed or a so-called regression. Please
tell us the versions where it worked and where it no longer works, and
the outputs of the commands.
