If you only want to use the executables (not the libraries) you might
also try the "static builds":

I'm quite happily using them alongside Debian/Ubuntu's repo versions.
Just unpack them to e.g. /opt/ffmpeg and then symlink ffmpeg, ffprobe,
etc into /usr/bin/ under a different name.
For example:

$ ln -s /opt/ffmpeg/ffmpeg-4.1.3/ffmpeg /usr/bin/ffmpeg-4
