Oh, sorry. One of the conf files I tried was the unchanged sample file 
like in ./doc/ffserver.conf

It is IMO identical to http://ffmpeg.org/sample.html

On Ubuntu 10-10 ffserver starts using this file, but not on debian wheezy.
